Sofant Technologies Ltd is a highly innovative technology company which based in the heart of Edinburgh, we are a growing company with a talented team of around 40 people. We are in the process of launching a satellite communications terminal which is industry-leading in terms of Size, Weight, Power consumption and Cost (SWAP-C).

Sofant has developed a low-cost phased array antenna platform which solves fundamental power consumption and heat problems in high frequency antenna systems. We are an ambitious later stage start-up which has received £20m in private equity and grant funding. Sofant is targeting a $11B market opportunity in satellite communications and in the future, it will target 5G and 6G applications with the same platform.

Description

The Senior MEMS Design Engineer will form a key part of the MEMS development team, focussing on the design, simulation and characterisation of RF MEMS devices.

Working within a growing team, the Senior MEMS Design Engineer will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of the MEMS life-cycle, from early-stage concept development to final design review, device characterisation, model validation and failure analysis. They will have the opportunity to lead sub-projects and the freedom to model and patent their own ideas.

Responsibilities

The core responsibilities include:

  • To develop, run and maintain electromechanical FEM models of RF MEMS bridges.

  • Analysing MEMS capacitance test data and interpreting changes in performance in terms of MEMS geometry and process variations

  • Design MEMS test structures to evaluate material characteristics, process parameters and new design ideas

  • To work with MEMS process and packaging engineers to ensure manufacturability and yield requirements are met.

  • Performing critical review of MEMS design, process and layout changes.

Essential

  • Degree in Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Strong degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or equivalent. A

  • master’s, PhD or equivalent experience in MEMS or a related discipline would be advantageous.

  • Experience in electromechanical design, simulation and layout of MEMS devices.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in COMSOL Multiphysics or similar coupled-physics FEA software.

  • Knowledge of wafer-level MEMS fabrication and process development.

  • Experience of reviewing and interpreting GDS layouts.

  • A strategic thinker with broad problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication skills, able to engage with stakeholders on all levels.

Desirable

  • Experience using JMP or similar statistical software for analysis of high-volume production data.

  • Experience in characterisation and test of MEMS devices.

  • Understanding of MEMS reliability testing and failure analysis techniques.

  • Familiarity with lumped element circuit modelling

  • Basic understanding of transmission lines and RF engineering
